  18. <p>     Erstwhile raider T. Boone Pickens exuded confidence last
  19. week as he arrived at the annual meeting of Koito
  20. Manufacturing, the Japanese auto-parts company with which he
  21. has been sparring for 16 months. Three hours later, he emerged
  22. red-faced and angry. "An absolute farce," fumed the 62-year-old
  23. Texan. Koito managers stonewalled Pickens even though he holds
  24. a 26% stake in the company. "Give me a chance," pleaded
  25. Pickens, demanding seats on Koito's board. But Koito
  26. shareholders voted down his demands. Company managers claim
  27. Pickens is only acting as a front for a Japanese greenmailer.
  28. "I invested in Koito for the long term," contends Pickens, who
  29. vowed, "I'll be back next year--same time, same place."
